Senate committee passes spyware bill

WASHINGTON - A U.S. Senate committee has approved a bill that would outlaw the practice of remotely installing software that collects a computer users' personal information without consent.

In addition to prohibiting spyware, the Spyblock (Software Principles Yielding Better Levels of Consumer Knowledge) Act would also outlaw the installation of adware programs without a computer user's permission. The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee approved the bill Thursday.

Spyblock, sponsored by Senator Conrad Burns, a Montana Republican, would prohibit hackers from remotely taking over a computer and prohibit programs that hijack Web browsers. The bill would protect antispyware software vendors from being sued by companies whose software they block.

Film based on ETA murders divides critics in Spain

A film about the murders in December of two young policemen by Basque separatists ETA won boos and applause at its screening at a Spanish festival, hours after ETA killed a soldier with a car bomb.

Dozens of journalists walked out of the press screening on Monday of "Bullet in the Head," the third full-length film of Spanish director Jaime Rosales.

Some critics booed while others applauded during the film shown at the San Sebastian film festival in the Basque region.

Regent acquires rights to "Tokyo"

Regent Releasing has acquired North American rights to the domestic drama "Tokyo Sonata," by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who is better known for J-horror genre films like "Pulse."

Judge says Sharon Stone's son will live with dad

Actress Sharon Stone has lost another round of custody proceedings over her oldest son.

A San Francisco judge denied her request for primary custody of 8-year-old Roan, who's been living with his father, newspaper executive Phil Bronstein. The couple divorced in 2004 after six years of marriage.

The judge ruled Sept. 12 that Bronstein's home is more stable and structured, reaffirming a 2007 court order that the executive vice president of the San Francisco Chronicle has permanent sole custody of Roan.

Trout seeks jury trial on complaint！！！

Greenville County Councilman Tony Trout has asked for a jury trial in his complaint alleging that two council colleagues slammed a door on his face and arm during a meeting last month of a council committee formed to monitor investigations of him.

Trout has asked two magistrates to award him $7,000 each from councilmen Bob Taylor and Fred Payne to cover pain, doctor bills and "public humiliation," according to the complaint.

Payne and Taylor declined to comment. Attempts to reach Trout on Friday were unsuccessful.

Both of Trout's complaints now are in Magistrate Robert F. Simms' Greer office. No response had been filed by Friday.

The complaint stems from an episode last month in which Trout pushed his way into an executive session of a committee meeting called by council Chairman Butch Kirven to discuss the impact on county personnel of the investigations of Trout.
