Symantec updates DLP endpoint, antispam gateway!!!!

Symantec Tuesday announced an updated version of its antispam-antivirus gateway, as well as its plans to link its systems management and data-loss-prevention products more closely to simplify deployments for customers using both technologies.

The next version of the Symantec DLP endpoint will have embedded in it Symantec's Altiris desktop-management agent, says Steve Roop, senior director of marketing for the vendor's DLP solutions.

In addition, theDLP 9.0 endpoint agent will add content-monitoring for Outlook and Lotus sessions (which today require specialized plug-ins) and standard HTTP and S-HTTP sessions. DLP 9.0 also will monitor printing and electronic faxing.

DLP 9.0 is expected to ship in the first quarter of 2009: pricing has not been announced.

Symantec also is upgrading its BrightMail Gateway antispam-antivirus appliance with a spam-defense feature that reduces throughput so that spam gets backed up in the spammer's mail system. BrightMail Gateway 8.0 is designed to deter spammers from sending spam to a corporate IP address protected in this manner, says Art Gilliland, Symantec's vice president of product management.

Biggest Malware Lure? Brad Pitt!!!

Movie star Brad Pitt has shoved Paris Hilton off the top of a list neither will have coveted being on. A fan entering Pitt's name in a search engine now has a startling one in five chance of finding a malware-hosting site instead, says McAfee.

Pitt is top of the fake website malware league, just ahead of a collection of pop and film stars that reads (in descending order) Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Heidi Montag, Mariah Carey, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, Cameron Diaz, George Clooney, and Angelina Jolie.

Hilton no longer even makes the fake web top ten, but can perhaps take some solace from her continued popularity with spammers.

If you're never heard of some of these people then it's a fair bet that you are not the intended target of a technique that has been for some years one of the commonest ways to infect a PC. But still it persists, driven by an apparently insatiable appetite among some Internet users for computer screensavers, wallpaper, ring tones and star pictures, at whatever risk to themselves.

"Cybercriminals employ numerous methods, yet one of the simplest but most effective way is to trick consumers into infecting themselves by capitalizing on Americans' interest in celebrity gossip," commented McAfee's Jeff Green. "Tapping into current events, pop culture or commonly browsed sites is an easy way to achieve this."

Well, I do actually worry (about mobile viruses)!!!!

In response to Kaspersky's statement that they were concerned about mobile malware, I provided a flurry of reasons why mobile malware epidemics don't occur today. This may not be the case in the near future, however, as changes in the handset space is making the creation of malware far more attractive.

Consumers lusting over the iPhone are driving changes in the handset space that will make the platforms far more attractive for malware authors. Over the next few years, we will see nearly every phone with high quality displays and effective browsers, running operating systems that can support third party applications. Customers will want to use these features; financial institutions, such as Bank of America, are responding by adding mobile features to their websites. Handsets that support these features are more expensive, and will end up being in use far longer, accumulating bugs along the way. And finally, the malware landscape is becoming increasingly competitive on the PC side, which will force malware authors to find fertile ground. The only piece missing is an effective monetization strategy for mobile malware (say that three times fast) that would make the labor profitable.

My thoughts about mobile malware are very similar to those about mac malware. It isn't a problem now, but if current trends continue it will be a problem in the future. It is not a question of if, but when, and those of us who are responsible for keeping our systems and handsets clean have to be prepared.

'Ransomware' Virus-Writer Identified!!!

The infamous Gpcode 'ransomware' virus that hit computers in July was the work of a single person who is known to the authorities, a source close to the hunt for the attacker has told Techworld.

The individual is believed to be a Russian national, and has been in contact with at least one anti-malware company, Kaspersky Lab, in an attempt to sell a tool that could be used to decrypt victims' files.

Initially skeptical, the company was able to verify that the individual was the author of the latest Gpcode attack -- and probably earlier attacks in 2006 and 2007 -- using a variety of forensic evidence, not least that he was able to provide a tool containing the RC4 key able to decrypt the work of the malware on a single PC.

The 128-bit RC4 keys, used to encrypt the user's data, are unique for every attack. The part that had stymied researchers was that this key had, in turn, been encrypted using an effectively unbreakable 1024-bit RSA public key, generated in tandem with the virus author's private key. But the tool did at least prove that the individual had access to the private 'master' key and must therefore be genuine.

Kaspersky Lab set about locating the man by resolving the proxied IP addresses used to communicate with the world to their real addresses. The proxied addresses turned out to be zombie PCs in countries such as the US, which pointed to the fact that GPcode's author had almost certainly used compromised PCs from a single botnet to get Gpcode on to victim's machines.

Next-Generation Computer Antivirus System Developed

"Antivirus software on your personal computer could become a thing of the past thanks to a new "cloud computing" approach to malicious software detection developed at the University of Michigan. The researchers' new approach, called CloudAV, moves antivirus functionality into the "network cloud" and off personal computers. CloudAV analyzes suspicious files using multiple antivirus and behavioral detection programs simultaneously. Traditional antivirus software that resides on a personal computer checks documents and programs as they are accessed. Because of performance constraints and program incompatibilities, only one antivirus detector is typically used at a time. The researchers see promising opportunities in applying CloudAV to cell phones and other mobile devices that aren't robust enough to carry powerful antivirus software."

What's new?

With this new version of Windows Live OneCare, our aim was to help consumers better manage their home environment. Our research has shown that most homes now have approximately 2.5 computers. This means that in addition to securing and maintaining multiple PCs, consumers now need to do the extra work associated with connecting devices and securing networks. To ease this burden, features such as multi-PC and home network management as well as printer sharing have been added to OneCare to help address the needs of the modern home environment.

This new version also establishes a foundation to better fill the needs of small businesses. Many small businesses need to protect and maintain a number of PCs, but may not have the resources for extensive onsite IT support. To help solve this problem, centralized backup has been added to OneCare so local backup on a small business network is a simple step instead of a time consuming hassle.

Here's a quick overview of the new features added to OneCare version 2.0 to help keep users' PCs and networks safe, reliable, and performing well:

  • Multi-PC and home network management: Helps ease management of multiple-PC environments by providing a single navigation bar for monitoring the security and maintenance of networked computers. Also enables one-click actions to resolve issues among computers within a home PC network.

  • Printer sharing support: Makes it easy to connect printers to local networks so all users in the vicinity can use the same printer.

  • Start time optimizer: Speeds PC boot time by removing rarely used applications from start-up menu. This helps to address one of the main areas of frustration for PC users as time goes on.

  • Proactive fixes and recommendations: Windows Live OneCare constantly monitors the specific configuration of the user's system and makes proactive fixes and recommendations to improve the computing experience.

  • WiFi security: Keep your home or small business wireless network safe with the new OneCare WiFi security feature.

  • Centralized backup: Enables users to centrally configure and monitor backups for all PCs covered under the same OneCare subscription, with the data from all PCs backed up to a central location.

  • Online photo backup: Keeps precious photos safe from theft or accidental loss by backing them up to a secure, offsite location in Windows Live (available to OneCare subscribers at an extra cost in the final v2.0 release).

All-in-one protection and maintenance

In one convenient package, Windows Live OneCare helps protect your computer, uses its optimization features to keep your PC running at its speediest, and even regularly backs up your important files:

  • Protection Plus uses antivirus and antispyware scanners, a managed two-way firewall, and integrated anti-phishing technology to protect your computer from viruses, worms, Trojan horses, hackers, phishing, and other threats. It runs continuously, but you can scan individual files and folders for viruses on demand simply by right-clicking them. You can even scan attachments you receive via Windows Live Messenger or MSN Messenger.

  • Performance Plus regularly defragments your hard disk, removes any unnecessary files that may clog your computer, and helps ensure important security updates from Microsoft are installed efficiently and on time.

  • Backup and Restore regularly copies your important files and settings to CD, DVD, external hard disk, network drive, or other data-storage device.

  • Instant Help provides online help anytime you need it, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Easy to use

Windows Live OneCare is always on, and constantly communicates the status of your PC's health in the notification area of your Windows taskbar:

A green icon means your status is Good. Protection Plus features like antivirus, antispyware, and anti-phishing are up to date, and your computer is not due for a tune-up or backup. Windows Live OneCare is running in the background, monitoring your system to prevent threats from viruses and spyware.

A yellow icon means your status is Fair. Usually this means you have an action to take, such as scheduling or running a tune-up or backup or downloading a noncritical update. A yellow icon means there is no immediate threat to your system, but you should take care of the action as soon as you can to return your system to green.

A red icon means your computer is At Risk. This can happen if, for example, Windows Live OneCare is unable to update Antivirus with the latest virus definitions because of a lost Internet connection, or if the Windows Live OneCare Firewall is turned off.

Always on and automated

Continuously working against threats, Windows Live OneCare is always on, and works with Microsoft Update to help ensure your computer is up to date with the latest critical security releases from Microsoft. You can also use OneCare to simplify home network tasks such as printer sharing, and centralized backup, on up to three computers. Keep your PC safe, secure, and 'green' with Windows Live OneCare.

Evolves to meet your needs

Windows Live OneCare provides automatic updates and service enhancements to subscribers the moment they're released. All PCs (up to three) within the OneCare circle of protection are kept current under the same subscription, giving you the latest technologies to protect your home network against emerging threats, and no worries about different antivirus software versions.
